GCSE & IGCSE courses include 12 hrs of tuition taken over 2 full days. 9am to 5pm. It is ESSENTIAL that you read the accompanying course outline(s) before applying for the course.

+ Aim

This course aims to build confidence and precision with the language, develop the linguistic knowledge already acquired in Y10, and achieve this through unseen comprehension passages, translation, and through rapid but systematic coverage of Taylor’s ‘Essential GCSE Latin’, as well as revision of Taylor Book 2, Chapters 9-10. The course focuses on some of the core areas of the Latin GCSE specifications currently offered OCR.

+ Key Topics Covered

The following topics will be used in illustration of key subject skills:

Focus on passages of prose literature from the Verse Literature A (Cambridge Latin Anthology) and Prose Literature B prescription (Druides, Tumultus et Rebellio, Cambridge Latin Anthology pp160-166 & pp170-174). However, students who are studying Prose A or Verse A can also be catered for.

Chapters in Taylor which deal with Latin accidence (pp.1-74), to identify areas of weakness in grammar

To revise the DVL/RVL (J282), paying closer attention to principal parts of verbs, and noun inflections.

Techniques for Latin composition

The following linguistic skills will be discussed and developed:

To continue to develop momentum and confidence in reading Latin, both on the page and aloud, and to improve problem-solving strategies in unseen translation

The RVL (particularly DVL), with focus on common roots and similar words

Correct referencing, and appropriate style and structure for 8 and 10 mark commentary questions

The following writing skills will be discussed and developed:

Approaching unseen translation questions (recognising different question types, accuracy, confidence)

Properly structuring full 8- and 10-mark essays on the Literature papers

+ Assessment

The course will include delivery of first rate material with a particular focus on the skills of approaching unseen Latin passages. Use of past examination questions supported by relevant mark schemes and some exemplar answers. The course will include homework to be completed each night.

+ Course Materials

Students should bring copies of their own specifications and their main textbooks. All other materials will be provided.

+ Other Information

Issues relating to internal assessment/coursework cannot be dealt with and pupils must be aware and understand that at times, areas that they are not studying may be covered, to ensure all students are catered for.

In all cases, students should come to the first session with full details of the specification which they are studying and the topics to be examined on. Students should also bring along their existing notes and any textbooks which they have.

Please note that the emphasis given to particular topics will be weighted to the needs and requirements of the candidates in the group.
