A Level courses include 21 hrs of tuition taken over 3.5 days. It is ESSENTIAL that you read the accompanying course outline(s) before applying for the course.

+ Aim

This course will revise topics for A-Level Business covering both Year 1 and 2 of the course. The aim is to prepare for the summer examinations and to boost student attainment. Specific examination questions and technique will be addressed and the more difficult topics will be covered. The course will be tailored to the needs of the students and more time and focus will be placed on topics that the particular group require and request greater attention on.

Starting a Business (Business objectives, Enterprise, types, opportunity cost, business planning).

Marketing (The market, research, positioning, segmentation, targeting, demand, supply, elasticity, mix, branding, promotion, pricing, distribution, extension, Boston Matrix).

Raising Finance (Internal, external, liability, cash flow, sales forecasting, revenues, costs, break-even, margin of safety, contribution, budgets, profit, liquidity).

Operations Management (Production, capacity utilisation, stock control, quality management.

Managing People (Staffing, recruitment, training, organisational design, motivation, leadership).

Corporate Aims, Objectives and Business Growth (Mergers & takeovers, organic growth).

External Influences – (PESTLE Political, economic, social, technological, legal, economic, Porters 5 forces).

Strategy, Decision making and Managing Change (ethics, culture, decision trees, critical path analysis, CSR).

Assessing Competitiveness using numerical data (financial statements, ROCE, HR, Investment Appraisal).

+ Assessment

The course will include homework to be completed each night and students will answer mock exam questions to enable feedback.

+ Course Materials

Students should bring copies of their own specifications. All other materials will be provided.

Students might find it useful to bring questions they found difficult as well as a list of their most challenging topics.

Please note that the emphasis given to particular topics will be weighted to the needs and requirements of the candidates in the group.
