A Level courses include 6 hrs of tuition per full day and 3 hours per half day. It is ESSENTIAL that you read the accompanying course outline(s) before applying for the course.

+ Aim

The course will revise the core topics for the A-level (Year 2) Biology specifications. Topics in the AS/year 1 specification will not be specifically covered on this course except where exam questions are synoptic. There is a separate 2 day revision course for the AS/year 1 material.

  1. Photosynthesis: The light stage, light independent stage, limiting factors on photosynthesis
  2. Respiration: Glycolysis, the Link reaction, Krebs cycle and Oxidative phosphorylation
  3. DNA: protein synthesis, mutations, introns and exons etc.
  4. Evolution: selection, speciation, Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium
  5. Gene technology: Gel electrophoresis, PCR, genetic engineering,
  6. Ecology: Ecological sampling, succession, populations

+ Three topics from the following list as requested:

  1. Energy and Ecosystems: Gross and net primary productivity.
  2. Carbon and Nitrogen Cycle:
  3. Microorganisms: Logarithmic scales and serial dilution.
  4. Homeostasis: Insulin, glucagon.
  5. Heart: The structure of the heart and the cardiac cycle.
  6. Neurones and the nervous system: Neurones, action potential, the synapse, reflex arcs.
  7. The Kidney: The nephron, ultrafiltration, ADH.
  8. Muscles: Actin, Myosin.
  9. Menstrual cycle: FSH, Oestrogen, LH and Progesterone.
  10. The Immune System: Antigens, Antibodies, the primary and secondary response.

Assessment

The course will include homework to be completed each night and students will answer mock exam questions to enable feedback.

Course Materials

Students should bring copies of their own specifications and their main textbooks. All other materials will be provided.

Other Information

Students might find it useful to bring homework questions they found difficult.
