The course content is relevant to students taking the second (final) year IGCSE exams in summer 2012.

Level: IGCSE Subject: Chemistry
Exam Boards: Edexcel (4CH0), CIE (0620) Course Code: IGCHEEDX

Course outline

Aim

The revision course aims to reteach the major (both core & higher/supplementary level) topic areas of the new Edexcel and CIE (0620) IGCSE Chemistry courses, to improve candidates’ exam technique at the particularly rigorous and precise style of the questions, and to provide exposure and familiarity with common and recent past paper questions and model answers.

Key Topics Covered

  • General skills

Equation-writing, constructing formulae, balancing equations, state symbols

  • Atomic structure and electronic structure

Of atoms and ions up to calcium. Dot and cross diagrams.

  • Ionic and covalent bonding; giant & simple structures

Dot and cross diagrams, physical properties, explanations, examples of all types.

  • Organic Chemistry

Fractional distillation, cracking, hydrocarbons, alkanes, alkenes, isomerism, physical properties, naming, Ethanol – its manufacture, uses and reactions, Polymerisation – addition and condensation.

  • Gases and their properties and uses

Hydrogen, oxygen, carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, nitrogen, sulphur dioxide, ammonia.

  • Groups 1, 7 & 8

The alkali metals: physical properties, their reactivity, reactions.

The halogens: physical properties, their reactivity, displacement reactions, uses.

The noble gases: reactivity, uses.

  • Reactivity series of metals

Displacement reactions, transition metals, position of C and H.

  • Extraction of Metals

The Blast Furnace, Electrolytic extraction of aluminium as examples.

  • Electrolysis of molten and aqueous compounds

  • Rates of reaction

Factors affecting rates; collision theory; explanations; graph drawing.

  • Equilibria and the Haber Process

Manufacture of ammonia, conditions, explanations for compromise.

  • Manufacture and uses of sulphuric acid & nitric acid
  • Calculations

Moles: masses/gas/solution examples, Titration techniques, equipment, accuracy, calculations Empirical and molecular formulae calculations, Exam calculation technique.

  • Analysis

Ion formulae, precipitation reactions, ion wet tests, flame tests.

Other Information

A calculator should be brought along to lessons. The course will prepare for both the theory and practical-based questions but no practicals will be carried out. Those candidates taking Edexcel or CIE Double Award IGCSE Science would also profit from taking this revision course since 70-80% of the topics above will be examined in those Chemistry papers.

This course is available during GCSE Sessions 3 and 4.

Please note that the emphasis given to particular topics will be weighted to the needs and requirements of the candidates in the group. GCSE courses include 14 hours of tuition (excluding breaks but including some testing) taken over 2 consecutive days. For more information and availability, please look at our Fees and Dates.
