Course Outline
This course is designed for students sitting the Higher Tier Triple Award Science examinations in June 2012. Although some of the Core material will be reviewed over the course, the bulk of revision will focus on Unit 2 (the Additional Science module) and Unit 3 (the Biology module only covered by students sitting Triple Award Science). For this reason the course is unsuitable for students sitting GCSE Dual Award Science.
Because of the differences in specification, this revision course is also unsuitable for students sitting International GCSEs in Biology.
What material will we cover?
Because of the volume of material on the GCSE syllabus, tutors will not much spend time revising material from the Core Science papers. However, tutors should be able to cover most of the topics on the Biology and Additional Science papers. Most tutors will ask students to highlight topics from the following areas;
Unit 2: Additional Science
- Cells
- Diffusion & osmosis
- Photosynthesis
- Food chains
- Decay & the Carbon cycle
- Enzymes
- Homeostasis
- Genes & Inheritance
Unit 3: Biology
- Systems for gas exchange
- Transport in humans & plants
- Exercise
- Kidney
- Micro-organisms in food and drink
- Micro-organisms in industry
- Micro-organisms and safety
What about the ISAs?
Please be aware that tutors will not have time to review material for the ISA component of the course.
Other Information
This course is structured across two days of tuition (14hrs). In addition to refreshing the key concepts and factual material of the Unit 2 and Unit 3 modules on the GCSE Biology syllabus, tutors will also cover application of knowledge, investigative and evaluative skills. There will also be a heavy slant towards exam style: most tutors will teach exam technique using practise questions from past-papers spread throughout the two-day course.
